Goal

The goal of this proposal is to purchase sufficient scientific apparatus to allow Eastside High School to create a 'Laboratory Bootcamp' for students with the express goal of teaching them the critical techniques of scientific investigation.

What will be done with my students

In this 'Bootcamp', the students will be immersed in the fundamental techniques of scientific inquiry, and will learn the basic skills necessary to navigate successfully in a science lab setting (in particular biology and chemistry) using the equipment provided in this grant request. Among the skills learned will be pipeting, weighing/measuring, titration, serial dilutions, and standardizing solutions. Students will also be instructed in the art of scientific writing. These skills will translate well to any student serious about participating in a career of science, and will greatly aid all students within the Eastside family who choose to participate.

Benefits to my students

The 'Bootcamp' will be open to all Eastside students, and will be most helpful to students interested in the science field (i.e., medicine, research, field science), students participating in the Science Fair, and students in the IB program who desire to excel in the science IA (Internal Assessment). The 'Bootcamp' will be run by Eastside chemistry and biology teachers, who will bring to bear their many decades of real-world research experience and expertise to the students. Although these items are earmarked for the 'Bootcamp', and are instrumental in the success of the camp, once the camp is over, the materials will be used by the teachers throughout the school year in all chemistry and biology classes they teach (these include IB and major program studies). They will then be gathered up at the end of the year to set-up the next year's 'Bootcamp'. With this approach, most students of Eastside High School will be able to benefit from these items.

Budget Narrative

The budget itemizes materials requested. Although additional equipment and chemical supplies will be brought in for the camp (e.g., electronic scales, Vernier 'LoggerPro' measuring systems, etc.), the items requested are needed and will satisfy the requirements for the initial camp, and will allow most of the technical skills outlined above to be taught by the instructors and mastered by the students.
