Goal

Students deserve to have a GREAT day, EVERY day. Every student should be in a learning environment that is student-centered and fun! My goal is to provide students with an alternative to sitting on a hard chair for 7 hours per day, in order for them to be comfortable in a productive learning environment.

What will be done with my students

Student engagement increases when students let their "wiggles" out throughout the day by sitting on wobble chairs, exercise balls, and wobble cushions instead of traditional chairs. Students will be provided with the opportunity to CHOOSE what kind of learning space works for them in order to be successful.

Benefits to my students

Immediate benefits of alternative seating include: using up excess energy that improves engagement,
improved metabolism, increased motivation, better oxygen flow to the brain, and improved core strength and overall posture.

Increased physical activity is correlated to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. Matthew T. Mahar, et al (PDF) finds that:
Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially.

Research shows that there is a correlation between student engagement and achievement (Jensen, 2013). Engagement is especially crucial for students that have a low-socioeconomic status. After their study of over 1,800 students living in poverty, Finn and Rock (1997) concluded that student engagement was a key factor in whether students stayed in school.

Budget Narrative

Each table in my reading classroom can sit 5 students. My wish is that each table can have 5 of one type of seating option. Four tables would have 5 of one type of seating for a total of 20 seating options so every student can be comfortable!!
