Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

To give our students with autism a way to independently access calming equipment to help regulate their sensory systems when they are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, overstimulated or upset. In the past our students with autism had access to the Cozy Canoe ($109.00). The Cozy Canoe was an effective and popular piece of equipment (so much so that we have had 6 over the past few years), however since it is inflatable, each cozy canoe has lasted for only 2-6 months. The Sensasoft Compression Canoe is not an inflatable and appears to be a substantial piece of equipment that will be used by many students for many years.

Goal

To give our students with autism a way to independently access calming equipment to help regulate their sensory systems when they are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, overstimulated or upset. In the past our students with autism had access to the Cozy Canoe ($109.00). The Cozy Canoe was an effective and popular piece of equipment (so much so that we have had 6 over the past few years), however since it is inflatable, each cozy canoe has lasted for only 2-6 months. The Sensasoft Compression Canoe is not an inflatable and appears to be a substantial piece of equipment that will be used by many students for many years.

What will be done with my students

The Sensasoft Compression Canoe will be housed in the sensory room where all students in our self-contained ASD classrooms will have access to it when with the occupational therapist during OT or with the behavior specialist and/or classroom assistant during a scheduled sensory break.
Students in our self-contained ASD classrooms will access the calm down jar independently as needed within their classroom.

Benefits to my students

Many students in our self-contained ASD classrooms have a difficult time maintaining their focus on academic tasks due to sensory processing issues. These issues often cause students to be hyper sensitive to noise, touch and/or light causing anxiety, hyperactivity or agitation. Sensory items are used to help organize and "calm" the brain. The Calm Down Jar (heavy weight with visually calming glitter gel) and the Compression Canoe are both sensory items used by individual students for 1 to 3 minutes to self regulate and achieve calm so they can reengage in their academic tasks.

Describe the Students

We have 3 self-contained ASD units. Students in our ASD units need specialized instruction in academics, language, and social skills in addition to access to sensory items to help organize their bodies for learning since approximately 90% of students with autism have sensory processing issues.

Budget Narrative

Items to be purchased from Fun and Function: Empowering Different. These sensory items are designed to meet the students' basic sensory needs, increase their time on task and decrease behaviors that disrupt their learning and/or the learning of others.
