Goal

The goal is to expose our students to various types of sensory input through play. Students will be able to increase sensory awareness and learn new techniques from qualified therapists during the time spent at this facility.

What will be done with my students

Students will be taken to the facility Rock the Spectrum, where they will experience various activities, which fulfill their sensory input and output needs. Through working with the staff, who are trained in sensory therapy, students and teachers will be exposed to new ways to fulfill our students' sensory needs.

Benefits to my students

By gaining more understanding of our students' sensory needs, teachers and staff will increase their ability to provide these activities on a daily basis, throughout the day. In addition, students will gain their own understanding of their individual needs and learn new ways to achieve this on their own. By increasing their fulfillment of sensory needs, students will decrease the presentation of inappropriate behaviors resulting from sensory needs.

Describe the Students

Our students attend a school for students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, while also having a disability that presents sensory behaviors such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Mental Illnesses, or Sensory Processing Disorders. Many of our students have additional disabilities such as Intellectual Delays. Our school focuses on behavior modification with the ultimate goal of reintegration to more "typical" school settings. The majority of our students are low performers and come from the Highest Poverty areas, with all students on free/reduced lunch.
