Goal

My students dislike writing as it is laborious for them. Perhaps, by adding technology and a different medium for writing, they may learn to enjoy writing and expressing themselves through the written word.

What will be done with my students

Boogie Boards can be used in place of paper and pencil activities for our small group instruction. As an ESE teacher, I need to evaluate and see each assignment that my students complete in order to drive the next instructional goal. Being able to do quick and simple formative assessments by looking at the Boogie Board for their written answer will allow me to do this in a time efficient manner. There will be no need to collect papers, grade them and then return the papers to the students. Also, ESE students need different ways to express their knowledge. This different modality will allow them a new way to demonstrate their knowledge.
This tool can be used in the classroom for writing assignments, math problems, multiple choice questions, spelling words....The list is only limited by the teacher's imagination.

Benefits to my students

Quick and immediate feedback to the students is necessary in order to correct errors before they become habit. Having the Boogie Board as a formative assessment tool will allow the students a fun way to show what they know. Paper and pencil tasks are stressful for many ESE students. Erasing errors become holes in paper. The bright lights of the Boogie Board allow for different senses to be used. ESE students are, in many cases, afraid to put pencil to paper due to making errors. This will allow them to make errors and then erase them with no evidence of the error remaining. They can learn from their mistakes without the mistakes remaining as torn paper, erasure marks, or smudges on a paper.
There is no wait time to power up and batteries that last a long time. The Boogie Board is powered by inexpensive replaceable coin cell batteries. No plugging in at night to recharge. Magnets on the back allow for hanging on a white board or filing cabinet for easy storage and quick access.
The Boogie Boards do not have internet access so the students cannot access content that may be questionable or of concern to parents and teachers.
