Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Many of the students at Calvin Hunsinger School experience poverty, academic and behavioral struggles, mental health issues and a variety of other stressors, such as single parent families or living with a relative. Frequently, my students come to school hungry and as a result, are not prepared to learn. They are provided breakfast and lunch at school, but often report that they are “still hungry”. The purpose of this grant is to make healthy snacks available to provide students with the energy they need to be engaged in the classroom and ready to learn! Many of my students do not maintain a healthy diet so there will also be instruction as to what "healthy" food is and is not.

Goal

What will be done with my students

Healthy snacks will be available to students as needed, as well as being available in the School Store. For example, if a student comes to school tardy and has not had breakfast, a snack such as peanut crackers and juice would be provided so he would not start his day hungry. Additionally, healthy snacks will be used for Random Reinforcements, where students who are doing what the teacher has instructed then to do, will be given a snack at a random (unannounced) time to encourage appropriate behavior. Students will be taught about making healthier choices; for example, choosing a 100% fruit juice over a 10% juice drink or choosing a flavored water instead of a sugary soda.

Benefits to my students

Many of my students are dealing with poverty and family and community issues. As a result, they are often hungry. Basic food needs are met at school through the breakfast and lunch programs. In addition, I would like to make healthy snacks available during the day. Since it is hard to focus and concentrate when you are hungry, my hope is that by having these snacks available, the students will be better able to maintain their attention, take advantage of the opportunities for learning and be more engaged in school. Additionally, students who are not hungry are more effective in non school settings such as going to a job or participating in community activities such as sports.

Describe the Students

Many of my students are economically disadvantaged, demonstrate low academic performance, experience behavioral difficulties and mental health issues, and a significant number live in single parent families or with other guardians (i.e. grandparents, group or foster home). The majority of my students are on free lunch (over 90%) and my school is one that is receiving Universal Free Lunch. Hunsinger is a Title One School. All of my students receive Exceptional Education Services (ESE) including services for students with Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Other Health Impaired, Specific Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairments and Occupational Therapy.
