Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

My goal is get imaginations rolling to enable my low level and upper level mathematical students to focus and engage in an activity that will cause them to have a reason to concentrate on the central purpose of my mathematics class, while at the same time deriving a significant and important educational lesson. I believe that activities the students can do with this educational toy will allow them to create engrossing projects while at the same time gaining a better understanding of a number of mathematical concepts, strengthening strategy, fine motor skills and improving their teamwork experiences.

Goal

My goal is get imaginations rolling to enable my low level and upper level mathematical students to focus and engage in an activity that will cause them to have a reason to concentrate on the central purpose of my mathematics class, while at the same time deriving a significant and important educational lesson. I believe that activities the students can do with this educational toy will allow them to create engrossing projects while at the same time gaining a better understanding of a number of mathematical concepts, strengthening strategy, fine motor skills and improving their teamwork experiences.

What will be done with my students

The students will use this educational toy as part of a structured series of lesson plans and also as a reward for remaining focused during a specified period of time. The students will build, adjust angles, fine tune their work and experiment with cause and effect to navigate marbles through a course they created and see what their planning and strategy has created. The system has been designed for a myriad of construction possibilities leading to predictable and (sometimes) unpredictable results, allowing for endless possibilities in form and construction. The students will work in small groups to plan, construct, test and finally exhibit their finished product for class approval Just imagine the fun and excitement they will experience as the marbles start rolling while hopefully focusing and being fully engaged in a project.

Benefits to my students

For the first time in my professional teaching career I have been entrusted with two full classes of low level math students, many of whom are taking a second remedial math class. Many of these students have failed to exhibit an ability to focus on even the most simple of tasks or mathematical ideas. I have never faced this challenge before this year. I am concerned that some may have very low self-esteem and I believe that unless I can somehow get them engaged in some sort of mathematical related activity they might very well be facing multiple challenges as an adult.
While browsing the internet, I discovered Mindware, a creator, manufacturer and distributor of educational toys for kids of all ages and adults.
I came upon this intriguing toy, and the many educational benefits it has to offer its users.
Students will be challenged to use their critical thinking skills (important to my level 4 and 5 students on the opposite end of the learning spectrum): they will see their creative, cooperative and logical thinking skills expand; STEM, geometric and mathematical skills, physics, basic engineering and fine motor skills will hopefully be honed.
I additionally plan to offer the mazes to the several self contained classes in the school, who will be able to provide severely emotionally and physically challenged students the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of these construction sets.

Describe the Students

Since the school year has begun, my student roll has expanded to 123 students. Of that, 40 are level 1or very low performing level 2 students confined to two "V" classes, who would be the chief beneficiaries of this opportunity. I have an additional 83 level 3,4 and 5 students in my "advanced" classes who would also derive the benefits of the Q Ba Mazes. In the mix are included no less than 11 ESE students and several with serious familial concerns.
There are additionally approximately 25 to 50 students there are severely emotionally and physically handicapped (Asbergers and MS students) who would gain both pleasure and benefits as I pass the mazes onto their classrooms.

Budget Narrative

The cost of the sets are the manufacturer's retail suggested price. I believe, however, that I can purchase the items on line for less. and therefore will not require the entire grant for the purchase.
