Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of this grant is to provide supplemental and alternative extended curriculum options for a range of ESE students from Kindergarten to 5th grade that are both on standard diploma and Access Points. The use of these curriculum kits will provide ESE teachers who work with a blend of these students in one classroom to be able to use engaging but relevant activities to merge both general education curriculum and Access Points curriculum in the same classroom. The use of this addition to the classroom curriculum will help merge general education standards with Access Points standards, making lesson planning and instruction more fluid and accessible for all students in one classroom.

What will be done with my students

The curriculum will be dispersed amongst the appropriate grade level teachers for the ASD unit and can be used as either supplemental homework packets for math or reading or small group tasks for intervention time. These materials include reproducible worksheets that build on previous knowledge learned. The kits also include engaging games that can be used in the classroom to help reinforce the lessons and help build social skills with the students, which are an important part of the ASD curriculum allowing it to be infused throughout all areas of academics in the classroom.

Benefits to my students

Students would benefit from these curriculum aides by being able to see how they have grown over time from basic math and reading concepts to more challenging concepts that will help in other areas of their math and reading curriculum. Teachers will benefit because they will have a curriculum tool that is both relevant to helping students working on general education curriculum as well as students who are self-contained and on Access Points. Teachers will also have a easy to use reference tool to help assess students on different standards as well as be able to easily scaffold lessons for both curriculums in one classroom. Teachers will also be able to delegate curriculum and activities to their classroom assistants for small group or one on one instruction for interventions, allowing the assistants to work more independently when needed.

Describe the Students

The students are all on the Autism Spectrum and range from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Some of the students are mainstreamed in general education classes with their peers for part or all of the day and some students are on Access Points and are in a self-contained class the entire day. The students may have other cognitive disabilities in addition to being autistic, such as having attention disorders as well as physical limitations.
