Goal

This project will be used as a hands on activity for reviewing science standards. Students will work in pairs to dissect owl pellets. They will have the opportunity to try and recreate the animal using the parts found within the owl pellet. This project connects to a 4th grade standard that has students explain that animals, including humans, cannot make their own food and that when animals eat plants or other animals, the energy stored in the food source is passed to them. 

What will be done with my students

Fifth grade students take the science FSSA at the end of the year. This assessment covers 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade standards. This investigation will be used to help review a 4th grade standard on how energy is passed from source to another through the food chain. Hands on activities such as this help with student engagement as well as retention of the information.  

Benefits to my students

This grant will provide my students with a hands on experience of food chains and how energy is passed from one source to another. It will benefit 90 students. Some of the supplies will be able to be reused year after year. 

Budget Narrative

Each pair of students will be given an owl pellet to dissect. Students will wear gloves when handling the pellets. The forceps will be used to break the pellets apart and remove any bones that are found. Students will then use the construction paper to try and piece the skeleton parts back together to try and discover what animal it may have been.
