Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Our goal is to increase students' literacy skills by bringing together our school community around the joy of reading. We want to provide an environment where the imaginations of our students, teachers and parents are set free through literature. By choosing one book, that spans various reading levels, the faculty and families can create a partnership by sharing their thoughts and ideas along with a passion for reading.

Goal

Our goal is to increase students' literacy skills by bringing together our school community around the joy of reading. We want to provide an environment where the imaginations of our students, teachers and parents are set free through literature. By choosing one book, that spans various reading levels, the faculty and families can create a partnership by sharing their thoughts and ideas along with a passion for reading.

What will be done with my students

The "1 Book, 1 School, 1 Super Community" initiative will positively impact students' reading fluency, comprehension, listening, speaking and writing skills. They will have authentic opportunities to read and discuss the text at home and at school. Related projects will span both locations thereby bridging the home-school divide. Seminole is a Title I school with 79% of students receiving a free/reduced price lunch. High poverty students often lack motivation to succeed in school and they demonstrate a sense of apathy regarding reading for pleasure. Bringing the whole school community together around one engaging book will build a sense of excitement that everyone will want to share. We are implementing a superhero theme this year so the "Almost Super" text is the perfect choice to increase students' desire to read and share their thoughts about the characters and plot with their friends, teachers and families. The experience will have a lasting effect on their academic achievement and it will serve as a beginning step on their journey to becoming lifelong readers! We plan to implement this project during the fall semester of the 21-22 school year. If additional funding can be secured we would like to repeat the initiative during the spring semester with the sequel text, "Searching For Super."

Benefits to my students

There will be a fun kick-off assembly, scheduled readings, with audio recordings for younger students, at home and in school projects, discussions, prizes, and more! Older students will have opportunities to read to younger students, parents can volunteer to be guest readers in classrooms and the principal will create bedtime story videos for families to share at home. This is a school-wide initiative that will span across Pre-K through 5th grade. It will incorporate reading, writing, art, listening and speaking skills. The books will continue to be used as younger students who are initially enjoying them as a read-aloud text become independent readers.

Budget Narrative

The $1,864 will cover the cost of the 400 books for the teachers and students at Seminole Elementary. All other supplies for the related book projects will be purchased using our normal district supply budget.
