Goal

To expand our library of class set books that are of high interest/complexity to gifted students so that they will be more engaged when reading and connecting to the LAFS. To give students an opportunity to read classic and high interest books under the guidance of a teacher to encourage both critical and creative thinking.

What will be done with my students

Many students in our gifted program qualify for free and reduced lunch, and have limited access to the types of books that engage students deeply. I use class sets of highly engaging books to teach students how to analyze, connect, and communicate their learning. These books can benefit all students in our gifted program and can also be checked out by our regular education teachers if they are looking for a more rigorous study for students. These sets of books are needed for differentiating learning for our highest achievers and help to ensure that they attain a full year's academic growth.

Benefits to my students

Students are projected to score higher on tests, be better prepared for classroom discussions (Socratic Seminar), and show greater enthusiasm for reading various types of novels and non-fiction texts. Students will also better be able to identify and explain various literary elements such as theme, symbolism, and allegory.
