Goal

Use Social Thinking Curriculum and the Social Skill Development Lab to give additional support and systematic programming to the students at our school (k thru 3rd grade) who show a need for behavioral/social intervention based on their individual classroom behavior data, ability to self-regulate during unstructured activities (ex. lunch or PE), ability to work independently during small group classroom work activities/projects and/or office referral data.

What will be done with my students

The behavior specialist and guidance councelor will use the Social Thinking Curriculum and Social Skill Development Lab with students needing Tier 2 or Tier 3 interventions for social/behavioral deficits. The Social Thinking Curriculum used will be based on each student's grade level, development level, and social/behavioral deficit/s (we currently have the Social Thinking Curriculum for k/1 students). Targeted students will participate in weekly small group Social Thinking Instruction during their grade level's intervention time period. In addition, 1 time per week students will have lunch in the social skill development lab where the guidance councelor and/or behavior specialist will facilitate the practice and generalization of the social skills taught during the week in a natural environment that will include Peer PALS (peer models). Since this will be a Tier 2 or Tier 3 intervention, progress monitoring will be ongoing for each student participating in the program.

Benefits to my students

By participating in the Social Thinking Curriculum and Social Skill Development Lab on a weekly basis, the targeted students will improve their social/behavioral functioning. The students participating in the social skills intervention groups will:
Learn to recognize that they and others have different perceptions and abilities to process social information
Learn to navigate their social thinking, social interaction and social communication in order to decrease problem behaviors and increase their ability to become effective members during classroom small group work activities/projects.
Learn to better adapt and respond to the people and situations around them

Participating in the Social Skill Development Lab will give the students the opportunity to practice their social skills in a small group with the support of trained staff (behavior specialist/guidance councelor) and peer models.

Describe the Students

The targeted students show a need for tier 2 or tier 3 support due to social/behavioral deficits. Currently there are 19 general education students (k-3) who would benefit from participating in the Social Thinking curriculum. Some of these students have been diagnosed with ADD (attention deficit disorder), sensory disorders, anxiety disorders or Asperger's. Some are language impaired. Many have no diagnosis. 9 students are serviced in our 2/3 self-contained ASD (autism spectrum disorder) unit and have high functioning autism.

Budget Narrative

The We Thinkers Vol. 2 Social Thinking Curriculum will be purchased from SocialThinking.com and will give us the ability to continue the concepts taught in the We Thinkers Vol. 1 program (which our school already has). The Social Skill Development Lab materials (learning/play materials) will be purchased from Lakeshore Learning and will be used in structured and facilitated play activities that will take place each week during the students' lunch period.
