Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

- Over spring break Girlfriend mentors in took 23 girls to see the movie Hidden Figures, a story of a team of African-American women mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the US space program. Our girls were inspired. Some of them never had the opportunity to see that movie or any movie in that setting before. We discussed that they too can be hidden figures in their own lives. They have the power to make change in our world, beginning with their education.

We would like to take our scholars to the Kennedy Space Center here in Florida so that they may see a more in-depth look at space, careers, and education in the eyes of science, math, engineering, and technology.

What will be done with my students

On May 16, 2017, Girlfriends of Melrose will travel to the Kennedy Space Center from 7am – 6pm. We will spend the day viewing exhibits, participating in question answer sessions and eat lunch with an astronaut so that they girls may learn about STEM.
Upon return, Girlfriends will meet and have an open dialogue on what they have learned on the trip. Also, each girl will be required to write an essay on what it means to be a hidden figure and how they can be the ‘first’ in their communities. These essays will shared out with group during next meeting.

Benefits to my students

Our critical need and what would be most beneficial to our scholars of the Girlfriends of Melrose Club is exposure to how getting an education is connected to real world career experiences. We encourage our scholars to stay educated at all times. Teaching and learning, learning and teaching should occur 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Describe the Students

Melrose is a PreK-5th grade title one school with predominately free lunch scholars. We currently have 406 scholars (ESE-18.6%) who exhibit mostly low performance but are growing at great gains due to good first teaching this year at Melrose.
