Goal

Beat is the foundation of music. Our students need to experience the principals of "beat" so they can create and perform these beats.

What will be done with my students

Students will be introduced to the basic beat: a quarter note gets one beat. Using rhythms sticks, students will perform a pattern of quarter notes. Younger students will march and perform on the sticks, while the upper grades will create their own rhythms cooperatively and perform them for the class.

Benefits to my students

Students will benefit from this lesson as it teaches not only the basic "beat" in music, but math skills as notes are placed in patterns. It also enhances their ability to work cooperatively and perform as a cohesive group together. What's more, the students need new sticks as ours are old and have developed splinters and hurt the students. Using the sticks makes teaching beat so much more fun than clapping, and therefore adds to the potential of what can be created.

Budget Narrative

30 - 8 inch rhythm sticks are needed as they can get damaged and worn out. $2.75 each balances to $95.45.
