60 Years of Local Commitment to Heart Health and Education

When it comes to a nonprofit agency with a clear message, Heart of Volusia, Inc. can reflect proudly on its history of more than 60 years promoting healthy hearts in Volusia and Flagler counties.

No, we are not affiliated with any national heart-related organization. All our efforts and our funds stay right here in the community and are directed to research, education and community service in the field of heart health.

From awards for young student scientists to grants for nurses’ continuing education and teachers’ heart-related classroom projects, the community can count on Heart of Volusia, Inc. for support.

Students

Each spring, Heart of Volusia provides tuition grants to Volusia and Flagler high school juniors who qualify to attend the Student Science Training Program (SSTP) at the University of Florida. UF welcomes 100 students in all for seven weeks of hands-on scientific research with faculty and research assistants.

Local participants and their parents also are invited to Heart of Volusia’s fall dinner, where the teens present a capsule overview of their summer projects.

Heart of Volusia provides sponsorship money for the annual Volusia County Schools’ Tomoka Regional Science Fair. Our team of judges then decides on cash prizes for first, second and third places in both the junior and senior divisions for heart-related projects.

In addition, for several years, Heart of Volusia has presented sizeable grants to area teachers who apply through FUTURES, INC., the local support/fundraising arm for Volusia County Schools. The grants are divided among numerous elementary and high school teachers who come up with heart-healthy classroom projects.

Medical Community

Area hospitals have relied on Heart of Volusia’s generosity over the years. Grants to Halifax Hospital were used to purchase medical equipment such as teaching mannequins and testing equipment and for nurses’ recertification programs. More currently, AdventHealth Hospital was awarded $2,000-$3,000 to stage its annual Cardiology Symposium.

Nurses, meanwhile, know they have a friend in Heart of Volusia, Inc. Cash scholarship awards are presented annually to the top nursing graduate planning a career in cardio or critical care nursing at Daytona State College, Bethune-Cookman University and the University of Central Florida.

HELPING THE COMMUNITY

Heart of Volusia purchased pool equipment for the Ormond Beach YMCA’s water aerobics program and provided a grant for the recent Volusia/Flagler YMCA blood pressure management project.

More recently, Heart of Volusia illustrated its emphasis on the benefits of exercise for heart health by partnering with the Junior Running Elements, a foundation for area youngsters interested in running and competing in local races. A similar group of college-age runners from Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University received a financial boost from Heart of Volusia for expenses such as logo T-shirts

In summation, Heart of Volusia has, as they say, “come along way, baby” from its origin in the 1950s. The Board of Directors trusts the community will continue its support through donations, memorial contributions and trusts to ensure our emphasis on heart health reaps benefits for all ages.
