Goal

My goal is to increase the year-to-year performance on the Algebra II End of Course (FSA) test by providing targeted and differentiated remediation for each individual student. 

 

What will be done with my students

Each student in my Algebra II Honors classes will be given an IXL Mathematics account. At the end of each unit, data will be collected on each student regarding his/her performance on items aligned to the MAFS.912 standards. Based on his/her performance, each student will be assigned an individualized "Ticket to Success" which will detail modules to be practiced in order to address conceptual and/or skill gaps that were evident on the unit assessment. Students will also be given the opportunity to earn points back on their unit assessments based on their performance on the modules assigned. 

 

Benefits to my students

The ultimate benefit will be an overall increase in students' understanding of the skills and processes involved in the Algebra II Honors curriculum.

In terms of students' affect towards mathematics, by addressing conceptual and/or skill gaps immediately, students will be less likely to feel the "snowball" effect that often happens in mathematics curriculum since often each unit builds upon concepts and skills from previous units. This in turn will increase students positive feelings toward mathematics.

IXL allows students to access skills and concepts from elementary school through Precalculus (with Calculus being added soon). This means that students that enter my class hesitant in their Algebra I, Geometry, and or Pre-Algebra skills (including work with fractions) will be able to access those remediation modules as well and address any prerequisite gaps they may have in their learning, thereby building their confidence. Likewise, those students that enjoy mathematics or would like to explore concepts/skills at a more advanced level may also access modules beyond the Algebra II level.

I have used this program and strategy for the last three years in my classroom in Virginia where I taught Algebra I and Geometry with much success. Each of those three years, 100% of my students passed their EOC test and over 65% of students scored at the "Pass Advanced" level, meaning they scored a 90% or higher on the assessment. 

 

Describe the Students

This program will be used with the incoming freshman with the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Largo High School. The IB freshman come from very diverse educational backgrounds throughout mid-county. Though traditionally high performing, their prerequisite skill base can be extremely varied and their affect toward mathematics can range greatly. All students will be required to take mathematics all four years, however, some will go on to college-level coursework and concepts while others will stay with a level that is more basic. Implementation of this tool will help me ensure that all of my students' needs are met. 

 

Budget Narrative

The money will be used to purchase a year-long classroom license for up to 90 students to support skills/concept remediation and extension in my Algebra II Honors classroom.
